Using the IDI and LBD to produce evidence based insights for policy and society. Discussion with Prof Julia Lane

The final Productivity Hub Research Leaders Group meeting will be on the subject of Using the IDI and LBD to produce evidence based insights for policy and society.

We will use this opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of using these system assets, from the richness and the complexities of the data, to building and sustaining teams of econometricians, statisticians and data scientists. Prof Julian Lane will bring her insights from across the globe as we design and build a system that is fit for the future.

Professor Julia Lane was one of the people on the ground at the early stages of the microdata revolution in New Zealand, leading ultimately to the IDI and LBD. Her work for the NZ Department of Labour was one of the triggers for the 2002 NZ conference on Data Integration and Linked Employer-Employee Data (see her review with Tim Maloney in New Zealand Economic Papers here). Julia is a professor at NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and sits on President Joe Biden’s AI Research Resource Task Force. She is also a cofounder of the Coleridge Initiative, whose goal is to use data to transform the way governments access and use data for social good.
